The main objective of the Action is to increase the knowledge required to create a wood processing strategy in Europe.

A wood processing strategy defines the options and decisions related to forestry and wood industry in order to match the goals and requirements of both (interaction between long term forestry goals and forest products industry initiatives).

The four working themes are common:
-  Wood as a renewable resource
-  Broad spectrum utilisation of wood
-  New perspectives for wood utilisation
-  End use related properties of wood products.

The main objective of the Action is to increase the knowledge required to create a wood processing strategy in Europe.
A wood processing strategy defines the options and decisions related to forestry and wood industry in order to match the goals and requirements of both (interaction between long term forestry goals and forest products industry initiatives).
Secondary objectives:
(1) To generate the identification of wood processing mechanisms producing solid timber products and wood based panels.
(2) To improve insight on forests and the use of the wood produced. Regional typology of forest production and the predicted or estimated future options for wood processing both in volume and quality will be part of this objective.
(3) To provide critical information on the future research needs for the forestry–wood industry chain.
In order to obtain increased knowledge on these topics, recent research efforts need not only to be gathered together but new joint initiatives require stimulation.
The theme ’Environmental consequences of using wood products’ is definitely a part of the basis of this Action, but the environmental issues are not the main focus. However, experts from the participating countries should be active in the sustainable development of the forestry-wood industry chain. In particular research should deal with the impact on typology, quantity and quality of wood products based on long term decisions in forestry.
But there is no intention to compile information on the life cycle assessment (LCA) approach or on the development of sustainable forest management systems. However, these items can be part of long term forest management and as such be used as tools in management.

The principal aim of E49 is therefore:

To help the WBP sector to meet future demands and competition from other materials and markets through the scientific-based advance of wood-based panels and their production processes towards higher technical, economic and environmental standards.

The objectives and work programme of E49 are shared between three Working Groups (WG):
- Process optimisation and process innovation.
- Fundamentals and modelling.
- Performance in use and new products.

During this project it will take part  the harvesting of several agricultural residues    from cultivation us our  neighborhood countries such as cotton, vine, straw etc. These plants are cultivated in deferent time of year  and this  provides us  with raw material for an industry for all  the year.

From these residues we will produce experimental particleboards and briquettes with  a mixture of all the above mentioned material with wood that usually use. The experimental   particleboards and  briquettes will evaluate   for their physical, mechanical and  hydroscopical properties.

With   the results of all the above properties we will find the accurate percentage that the mixture can replace the  usual raw material without degrease of the main particleboard’s  and briquettes properties.
The results will be helpful for the particleboard’s and briquettes industries in both countries.

QUALITY CONTROL AT UTILIZATION OF AGRICULTURAL RESIDUES AS RAW MATERIAL FOR PARTICLEBOARDS AND BRIQUETTES

Project number: БМ-4/2005 г

Duration: 2005-2008

Research team:

Dr. Julia Mihajlova (Project coordinator from Bulgaria), Dr.Todor Todorov, Ms. RosenGrigorov Students: Hr. Totev, Sv. Glavev, A. Atanasov - University of Forestry - Sofia, Bulgaria

Dr. Borce Iliev (Project coordinator from Macedonia), Dr. Yosif Dimeski, Dr. KonstantinBahchevandjiev, Dr. Mile Pesevski – Faculty of Forestry – Skopie – Macedonia

Objectives:

  • Development of optimal composition for obtaining the particleboards and wood

briquettes using different types of lignocellulosic agricultural waste;

  • Development of appropriate technological shedules for obtaining high-quality boards and briquettes using these materials;
  • Optimizing the participation of binder;
  • Outputs of the project are the development of particleboards and wood briquettes with the participation of agricultural lignocellulosic materials obtained under laboratory conditions that meet the requirements of EN standards.

Expected outputs:

  • Obtaining high-quality wood material - particleboards and briquettes on the basis of material consisting of wood and agricultural lignocellulosic materials;
  • Effective utilization of lignocellulosic agricultural waste as industrial raw material;
  • Saving scarce wood material;
  • The full use of the two countries established production facilities for particleboardsand wood briquettes;
  • Providing additional income for the agricultural producers;
  • Providing additional jobs in collecting, crushing and transport of agricultural lignocel lulosic materials;
  • Improving the environment in the agricultural areas on both sides.
