The Action aims at the improvement of existing and the development of novel methods and techniques for fast and accurate quality assessment along the forestry wood chain. Special attention is given to a) scanning of round wood for inherent wood properties, b) determination of moisture content and distortions, and c) assessment of strength, stiffness and visual appearance of timber and wood products.

European Cooperation in the field of Scientific and Technical Research
Quality control for wood and wood products
Action E53

COST is an intergovernmental European framework for international co-operation between nationally funded
research activities. COST creates scientific networks and enables scientists to collaborate in a wide spectrum of
activities in research and technology. COST activities are administered by the COST Office.
Chairman: Robert Kliger
Duration: 2006 – 2010
Countries participating in COST Action E53:
AT, BE, BG, CH, HR, DE, DK, ES, FI, FR, GR, HU, IE, IT, LV, LT,

Management Committee Members from BULGARIA:Julia MIHAILOVA

The principal aim of the COST Action E53 is toimprove methods of quality control in processing
round wood and timber to ensure that timberproducts and components meet the requirements of
the users. The Action will also promote theimprovement of specifications for timber products
and contribute to the economic optimisation ofproduction so that the full environmental and
sustainability benefits of the forestry wood chaincan be realised.
