The Department of General Silviculture was founded in 1931 and until 1945 its first head was Professor Methodi Ruskov, followed by the professors Acad. Boris Stefanov (for period 1945–1949), prof. Nikola Penev (1949–1964), Acad. Mako Dakov (1964–1971) and prof. Ivan Dobroinov (1971–1976).

After merging the two departments into one in 1976, the department was headed by Prof. Vlassi Vlassev (1976–1979), Prof. Petar Kostov (1979–1982), Acad. Mako Dakov (1982–1989), Prof. Slavcho Iliev (1989–1993), Prof. Georgy Rafailov (1994–2004), and since 2004 by Assoc. Prof. Georgi Kostov.
Many people worked in the Department in different periods, among them:

Since 2004 the Department is headed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Georgy Kostov.

The educational and research work in the Department is focused to the following areas:

  • Close-to-nature and sustainable forest management;
  • Forest ecology, forest stand dynamics and dynamics of forest resources;
  • Seed production, nursery production and afforestation;
  • Applying multiple forestry;
  • Rational use and regeneration of non-timber forest resources;
  • Multifunctional forest management and multifunctional forest planning;
  • Quality Management in Forest sectorц
  • Forest certification;
  • Forestry pedagogics.
