The Arboretum of the Forestry University became a learning environment for future landscape construction specialists. Over the course of three days, 11th-grade students from the “Landscape Construction” program at Hristo Botev Sofia High School of Construction, Architecture and Geodesy put their knowledge into practice, worked alongside university specialists, and explored part of the University’s educational and research infrastructure.

From 6 to 8 July, the students completed part of their compulsory practical training at the Forestry University Arboretum. The programme was designed to provide them with valuable hands-on experience while introducing them to the professional activities involved in the design, maintenance, and management of green spaces.

During the practical sessions, the students worked in the front section of the Arboretum along St. Kliment Ohridski Boulevard, participating in maintenance and landscaping activities. Their efforts contributed to the improved appearance of this well-visited area of the Arboretum while allowing them to experience one of the greatest benefits of practical education—the opportunity to see the immediate results of their own work.

Alongside their fieldwork, the students took part in an educational programme showcasing different aspects of the Forestry University’s academic and scientific activities.

They visited the University’s greenhouse, where they explored a rich collection of plant species cultivated under controlled conditions and learned about their maintenance and care. The greenhouse ecosystem, where butterflies move freely among the plants, offered an additional opportunity to observe the close relationship between plants and beneficial insect species.

The programme also included a visit to the University’s Genetics Laboratory, where the students were introduced to modern plant biotechnology techniques. They learned about in vitro plant propagation, its role in preserving valuable plant species, and the contribution of scientific research to contemporary horticulture, landscaping, and environmental conservation.

A practical presentation held in the Arboretum focused on pruning techniques for ornamental trees and shrubs. The students became familiar with different pruning methods, their applications, and their importance for plant health, longevity, and aesthetic value.

The participants were welcomed by Prof. Dragozova, Vice Rector for Accreditation and Ranking, Communication Policy and Career Development at the Forestry University. She congratulated the students on their commitment and enthusiasm, presented them with small university souvenirs, and encouraged them to continue their education at the Forestry University.

The practical training offered the students much more than fieldwork. It gave them the opportunity to meet university lecturers, visit teaching and research facilities, and gain first-hand insight into the modern infrastructure available to Forestry University students. Through this experience, they developed a deeper understanding of the University’s educational environment and the wide range of career opportunities in landscape architecture, landscape construction, forestry, and plant sciences.
