The library information centre at the University of Forestry is created in 1948 as a part of the library of the Sofia State University (SSU). Till then the service of the lecturing staff and the students of the Forestry Department of the Agronomical Forestry Faculty has been done by the library of the Sofia State University and the then built departmental libraries. After the separation of a separate Forestry and later Forestry Faculty and its transfer to the Agronomical Academy, the library centre became affiliate of the Academy.

After the establishment of the High Forestry Institute as a separate high educational entity in 1953, the university library starts its own life. In the beginning the fund enumerated 2871 volumes of educational and scientific literature. At the moment the fund of the Library and Information Centre is around 109 000 volumes of books, PhD theses and periodicals, and is presented through traditional book catalogues – Alphabetical and Systematic catalogue of books, periodicals and Ph D theses. It consists of above 70 684 volumes of books, 28 087 volumes of periodicals and 8806 volumes of standards and patents, which are available to the students, PhD students and the lecturers. The library information centre has scientific literature in 66 CDs.

One of the basic functions of the Library and Information Centre is the information service of the readers. At the end of the year 2000 was bought a programme product “Integrated Library Information System –ILIS-e-Lib.2.0” for the creation of electronic catalogues, including analytical descriptions of books, PhD theses and PhD abstracts, as well as an analytic description of articles from periodicals. To many of the described articles are scanned and added summaries.

Towards October 2016 16 228 entities have bibliographical description and module “Books” in the electronic catalogue. The described articles are 49 941, and PhD theses with bibliographical description are 388.

The library Information Centre at The University of Forestry participates in the National Agrarian Scientific-Information Complex (NASIC). An access to the united library resources at The Central Agrarian Library at The Thracian University of Stara Zagora, the agrarian University of Plovdiv and The Library Information Centre at the University of Forestry.

In the executed project “Modernization of the Library Information Centre are introduced measures for the improvement of the energy efficiency of the building in which the Library information Centre is located. An accessible architectural environment at The University of Forestry, Sofia has been established by the scheme BG 161PO 001/1.1-07/2009 at the Operative Project Development of Resources (2007-2013),co-financed by the European Union through The European fund for Regional Development.

A whole new system for marking and protection of the library entities has been introduced. Each book is provided with two markers-barcode and RFID. In an attempt for a unregulated carrying out of the book, the protective system, located at the front door is switched on. A sound signal is activated, and the safe portals are closed. The security system includes a network of 16 cameras, covering completely the premises of the Library information Centre. The cameras make 24 hours recordings which could be reproduced when needed.

A modern machine for the digitalization of books has been secured, with multiple functions for the consecutive processing of the materials. Much of the textbooks’ fund has been digitalized, whereas the process continues.

A new software has been added, the modules of which comprise a wide spectrum of activities. The borrowing and returning of literature is done through a marking of a barcode with which each library entity is provided. The new library cards also have a similar barcode, thus facilitating the identification of the visitors. The system allows the Internet users to check their library card online-it is possible to follow the whole history of each borrowing and return. A possibility for online claim in advance for books is added whereas in registration each reader receives user’s name and password for an access to the electronic resources of the Library Information Centre. This includes an opportunity to use the full text digital content whereas at the moment such processing is mainly for old textbooks and manuals which have not been on sale for centuries and have no new editions. Through the new system the users receive an access to educational books, not possible to be used through standard borrowing. Another new thing is that the users could create their own lists with literature in their profile.

At the basic premise are situated 45 numbers of energy-saving work stations, ensuring access to the electronic resources of the Library Information Centre. What is peculiar about them is that they are of the type “Hobit”, which means that they are not autonomous computers but are connected to the central server. In this way is achieved a higher level of security and the risk of problems, connected with a bad software decreases considerably.

The Library Information Centre is supplied with modern climatic system consisting of two outer and 16 inside bodies which ensure the comfort of the readers annually.

In 2015 the Bulgarian Institute for Standardization opened at The Library Information centre at The University of Forestry an Information Centre on Standardization which is a part of the project of the Library Information Centre for the creation of information centres for standardization at the high schools. The basic aim is development of the collaboration between the Library Information Centre and the high educational institutions. The information centre is situated at the basic library reading room of The Library Information Centre where there are two work stations with access for students and lecturers for free reading of selected Bulgarian standards which could be used for educational and scientific purposes.
